This takes place until the Ancient of Days comes and judgment is given to the saints, at the time the eternal kingdom becomes their possession. Consequently, it is little wonder that in the events recorded in Daniel 5, Belshazzar was ignorant of Daniel and the abilities God had given him. He had endured the training of the Chaldeans and he had lived his life in the service of a foreign king, at first the foreign king who had overthrown his country. In spite of these kings, the saints of the Highest One will possess the eternal kingdom forever and ever. This is represented by the four heads on Daniels leopard beast. Daniel is greatly distressed by the vision which he sees in chapter 7. He will keep continual pressure on the saints of the Highest One to try to break and destroy and annihilate them. When we expect it least, the Lord will return, the wicked will be punished, and the kingdom of God established forevermore. 7 For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night. With iron-like teeth, horns (some with eyes), and feet, it is utterly destructive. God grants this king success and his saints suffering, but only for an appointed time. Daniel uses the expression Son of man twice. (10) What effect did the vision have on Daniel, and why? The fourth beast in Daniels dream relates to the fourth kingdom in Nebuchadnezzars dream, the Roman empire. He gave Daniel a general summary of the dream, These great beasts, which are four in number, are four kings who will arise from the earth. In those days, as in our own, there are always those are too quick to conclude that the kingdom of God has come (see Matthew 24:4, 6, 8, 24-28; 2 Thessalonians 2:1ff.). 1 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel saw a dream and visions in his mind as he lay on his bed; then he wrote the dream down and related the following summary of it. Up to this time, it was simply a synonym for being human, a son of man. Now, in verse 23, the angelic interpreter explains the relationship of the boastful beast and the coming of the eternal kingdom of God. 24 As for the ten horns, out of this kingdom ten kings will arise; and another will arise after them,81 and he will be different from the previous ones and will subdue three kings. The use of the word time in Daniel is understood to be years. In chapter 5, King Belshazzars dream should have greatly alarmed him, but apparantly it did not. The second is bear-like. During times of oppression, it may appear the saints are being defeated and that Gods kingdom is but wishful thinking. Alexander the Great's empire and its divisions after his death were predicted long in advance in Daniel 11. If a man cannot remember the dream he saw (it means): his (personal) god is angry with him. Daniels response is testimony to this reality. 8 And all who dwell on the earth will worship him, every one whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain. It should give you a caring heart toward the unsaved as you seek to win them to the Lord. (1) It follows the narrative concerning Mishael, Hananiah and Azariah in the matter of Nebuchadnezzar's golden image (Daniel 3). The first recorded vision comes to Daniel in the form of a night vision, like those of Nebuchadnezzar (2:1; 4:5) during the first year of the reign of Belshazzar. Between the first half of verse 23 and the second half of this verse we have what has been referred to as the great parenthesis in the Old Testament, the mystery of the church and the Church Age which was not revealed to the world until after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. I have heard a number of attempts to explain the gaps in Old Testament prophecy. It seems that three of the kings try to resist him and he overthrows them by force. Daniel said that his thoughts were greatly alarming him and his face grew pale. The angel that Daniel was talking with gave Daniel greater detail concerning the fourth beast; he described this fourth beast as a fourth kingdom coming from the earth, it will be different from all the rest, this kingdom will devour the whole earth and tread it down and crush it. So they came and stood before the king. A Vision of Judgment (Daniel 7:9-12) 2. Daniels response to the vision was far from assuring or calming. He could not figure out what the dream meant, so he wanted his advisors to explain it to him. Note these general observations about our passage before we turn to a more detailed study. 13 I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him.77 14 And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations, and men of every language Might serve Him. He was at ease when he received the vision, and then he became fearful, and his mind alarmed him (4:4-5). 9 If any one has an ear, let him hear. Daniel finds nothing to compare to it. (19-26) Daniel explains the rise and coming fall of Nebuchadnezzar. (8) The four beasts are all different, with the last standing apart from the first three. 26 But the court will sit for judgment, and his dominion will be taken away, annihilated and destroyed forever. Prophecy reveals that which we would not and could not expect apart from divine revelation. God will establish His kingdom, and that kingdom, unlike the kingdoms of men, is eternal. They believed that the Messiah would come to establish the kingdom, to bless the Jews and to condemn the Gentiles. Since the last kingdom and the prophecies associated with it have not yet been fulfilled, we must in some way be a part of that kingdom. This part of Daniels dream is new information that was not conveyed in Nebuchadnezzars dream in chapter two. 3 While they are saying, Peace and safety! then destruction will come upon them suddenly like birth pangs upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. The fourth beast appears to differ from the other three in that he is more beastly, more powerful, more destructive, and more arrogant. Whether liberal or conservative, our conclusions grow out of the premises and presuppositions governing the process and the product of our interpretation. This designation refers to God the Father in a way that stresses His eternality, dignity, and power. 1. 11 And I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spoke as a dragon. Daniel's prophecy was one of hope. During those days the revived Roman empire will be ruled by a confederation of ten kings as described by the ten toes of the statue of Daniel 2 and the ten horns of Daniels dream. Having related the dream, Daniel then interprets it: it concerns four successive kingdoms, beginning with Nebuchadnezzar, which will be replaced by the everlasting kingdom of the God of heaven. The saints must believe and behave according to what God has promised about the future the righteous will possess the kingdom of God forever. In fact, Daniel has trouble interpreting some of his own dreams. The emphasis is positive. In chapter 2 we read that Nebuchadnezzar was troubled and terrified by his dream, we read here in verse 15 that Daniel was distressed in his spirit because he knew that God had just shown him a panorama of tremendous events yet future and Daniels distress was his lack of understanding his dream. The death of this king brings about the end of his kingdom. Prophecy is necessary then so that men are reassured of divine deliverance and blessing, as well as divine judgment (see 2 Peter 2:4-9). These kingdoms go from bad to worse. His thoughts alarm him, and his face pales. The three ribs in the bears mouth between its teeth most likely represent Babylon, Egypt, and Lydia, three empires conquered by the Medo-Persian empire. Some people have a rather irreverent attitude toward prophecy, they approach it as a pastime and they delight in figuring out complex date schemes and drawing detailed diagrams of the future. As we move into the second half of Daniel 7 and begin to dissect Daniels dream with the help of Gods Word and the help of history past because some of this dream which was yet future for Daniel is past history for us. All nations of the earth will serve and live under the peaceful rule of the Son of Man and the people of Israel will receive their promised inheritance in the land of Israel, restored Israel. As I stated two weeks ago the leopard was noted for its swiftness and the two pairs of wings suggests added swiftness beyond the animals own ability. The revelation of the writing on the banquet hall wall, already described in chapter 5, actually happened later, on the last day of Belshazzars life. Suffering and glory are a part of one work. The vision plays on before Daniel, almost as though in answer to his desire to know more. While most of those in this kingdom may not have had a true conversion, at least they tolerated the Jewish faith as the religion of the state. If we go back to Daniel 2 and look at the statue in Nebuchadnezzars dream, we find that it too represented four kings and their kingdoms.
