This takes place until the Ancient of Days comes and judgment is given to the saints, at the time the eternal kingdom becomes their possession. Consequently, it is little wonder that in the events recorded in Daniel 5, Belshazzar was ignorant of Daniel and the abilities God had given him. He had endured the training of the Chaldeans and he had lived his life in the service of a foreign king, at first the foreign king who had overthrown his country. In spite of these kings, the saints of the Highest One will possess the eternal kingdom forever and ever. This is represented by the four heads on Daniels leopard beast. The visions explanation was not thorough enough to satisfy Daniel. Would Belshazzar toast the gods of gold, silver, wood and stone with the sacred temple vessels? The message of this prophecy is really quite simple and may be summed up this way. (1) The troubling dream. In Revelation it is also referred to as 42 months and 1260 days which all work out to 3 years. Dwight Pentecost writes, The existence of the church in the present Age was nowhere revealed in the Old Testament. Therefore, gird your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:13). A person should not take credit for what God does through him. Chapter 2 contains a very significant prophecy, revealed by God to king Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel made it very clear that the dream and the interpretation had come for the one true God. Interpretations of Daniels prophecies differ widely. Prophecy speaks not only of the joys and glories of Gods kingdom to come but of the suffering and tribulation preceding the eternal blessings of the kingdom of God. Encouraged to do so, it savagely devours. In order to save Rose, Unity asks her to give up whatever makes her the dream vortex. The king knew that Daniel spoke the truth. As the saints suffer at the hands of the wicked, it may appear all hope is lost. (5) Prophecy is not written as hype but revealed to produce the hope of glory and endurance in present tribulation. Generally, it is agreed that this beast represents the Babylonian empire and king Nebuchadnezzar in particular. The point of this prophecy is not to tell us who future kings will be, but rather what they will be like. He would rise from the dead (12:40). Rather than publish what he had learned he kept it to himself, until that time that the Holy Spirit guided him to write down and reveal what he had learned to the saints. This angel responded and gave Daniel understanding into his dream as he interpreted it for him. March 1, 2023, 6:00 a.m. Arioch then explained the matter to Daniel. God may choose to delay judgment on the wicked until their sin reaches full bloom; the possession of the land of Canaan would not happen in Abrahams lifetime, but more than 400 years later after the suffering of the people of God (see Genesis 15:12-17). The reign of Belshazzar was, in some measure, a foretaste of what was yet to come in full measure during the reign of the fourth beast, especially of the eleventh horn. Thirdly (and most importantly), the prophecies of Daniel mean exactly what God says they mean, nothing more and nothing less. The fourth beast receives greater attention and is of the most interest to Daniel. Nebuchadnezzar may have started badly, but by the time we read of him in Daniel 4 he seems to be a true believer in God, urging the citizens of his kingdom to worship and serve Him. If you need one see me after the service and I will get you a copy. The fulfillment of the prophecy of Belshazzars demise underscores the certainty of the fulfillment of Daniels vision in the last days. The prophecy of this chapter is divinely interpreted. Daniel 2:1). Here is the perseverance and the faith of the saints (Revelation 13:1-10). Two weeks ago, we covered the first 14 verses, Daniels summary of his dream. Verses 1-14 contain the vision which God gave to Daniel. The final words of verse 25 are carefully chosen to let the reader know that while this king appears to be successfully opposing God, all he does is a part of the divine plan for the last days. Prophecies are given so that we may look at history, especially events occurring in our own lifetime, from Gods perspective. May the Spirit of God reveal the meaning of this prophecy to us and produce in us that which God desires to His glory and our good. The boastful beast becomes even more aggressive, waging war with the saints and even overpowering them. Just what this means is unclear, but it suggests this arrogant king not only speaks against God, but, like Satan, he aspires to change the order God has established. (1) Why does Daniel indicate the historical setting of the vision he receives in chapter 7? 2 For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. There seems to be a close connection between the vision of Nebuchadnezzar, which is revealed and interpreted in chapter 2, and the vision of Daniel in chapter 7. But the saints of the Highest One will receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, for all ages to come. Then I desired to know the exact meaning of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others, exceedingly dreadful, with its teeth of iron and its claws of bronze, and which devoured, crushed and trampled down the remainder with its feet, and the meaning of the ten horns that were on its head and the other horn which came up, and before which three of them fell, namely, that horn which had eyes and a mouth uttering great boasts and which was larger in appearance than its associates. In the Old Testament, the expression son of man was used most frequently in reference to men, who were merely (as opposed to God) human. Prophecy greatly benefits the Christian because it enables him to see things from the bigger and broader perspectivefrom Gods perspectiveso that when he suffers, he knows it is but a part of the process of getting to glory. Remember he had seen the innumerable host of angels attending the Ancient of Days. La Habra, CA : The Lockman Foundation, 1995, Embedded video for Daniel's Dream Interpreted - Daniel 7:15-28. After this chapter, the book returns to the Hebrew language. Alexandra, the daughter of a rich British aristocrat, caught his attention. The ten horns, Daniel is told, represent ten kings who will emerge out of the fourth kingdom. This fourth beast has the distinction of ten horns. Our study of this chapter will isolate what troubled Daniel about the future. Daniels first inner turmoil occurs in chapter 7. The three and a half years referred to here in Daniel is the last half of the tribulation, also called the Great Tribulation and the Time of Jacobs Trouble. 8 While I was contemplating the horns, behold, another horn, a little one, came up among them, and three of the first horns were pulled out by the roots before it; and behold, this horn possessed eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth uttering great boasts. (6) How important is it for us to identity the kings and the kingdoms mentioned in our text? Editing allows an author to set aside details which are not significant and focus on the essence of the message he is trying to communicate. Remember Daniel was in his 60s when he received this revelation. It would be but a very few years until Cyrus would come to power and assist the Jews to return to Jerusalem and the land of Israel. (6) Prophecy is written to sober the saints. It should be remembered that many narratives of scripture are related in a very condensed form, fuller details being added afterwards. He distinguishes himself by his ability to overcome the whole earth, crushing it under foot. Does this dream have any significance for us? The second scene portrays the establishment of the thrones on which the Ancient of Days and those holding court are to be seated to pronounce judgment. The seriousness of the prophetic truth personally affected Daniel, motivating godly fear and self-examination. Lets pray and ask God to teach us and guide us as we look at His prophetic word. Neither is prophecy written to make us happy or to feel good. (3) What principles should guide and govern our attempt to interpret the prophecy of this chapter? His throne was ablaze with flames, Its wheels were a burning fire. 17 Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. Would this horn Daniels vision revealed oppose the people of God and even blaspheme God Himself? Unfortunately, the king did not heed the dreams warning, and his kingdom was taken away for a time. Consider the birth of a child, remembering that Gods deliverance and salvation is likened to birth. The second time, the expression is used in reference to Daniel himself, as it will be used very frequently in Ezekiel to refer to this great prophet: So he came near to where I was standing, and when he came I was frightened and fell on my face; but he said to me, Son of man, understand that the vision pertains to the time of the end (Daniel 8:17). That night his life and his kingdom came to an end. When mentioning the little horn that grew up and uprooted three of the first ten horns, Daniel now tells us that this little horn grew until it was larger in appearance then the remaining seven horns. As the boasting horn of Daniel 7 seems to be getting away with his blasphemies and his oppression of the saints, it seems to him he can do whatever he wishes, including the changing of times and law. The angels went on to add that the saints of the Highest One will be given into Antichrists hand for a time, times, and half a time. (8) Is there any relationship between Nebuchadnezzars dream in chapter 2 and Daniels dream in chapter 7? 2 Peter 3:8-9, But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. Daniel is greatly distressed by the vision which he sees in chapter 7. He will keep continual pressure on the saints of the Highest One to try to break and destroy and annihilate them. When we expect it least, the Lord will return, the wicked will be punished, and the kingdom of God established forevermore. 7 For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night. With iron-like teeth, horns (some with eyes), and feet, it is utterly destructive. God grants this king success and his saints suffering, but only for an appointed time. Daniel uses the expression Son of man twice. (10) What effect did the vision have on Daniel, and why? The fourth beast in Daniels dream relates to the fourth kingdom in Nebuchadnezzars dream, the Roman empire. He gave Daniel a general summary of the dream, These great beasts, which are four in number, are four kings who will arise from the earth. In those days, as in our own, there are always those are too quick to conclude that the kingdom of God has come (see Matthew 24:4, 6, 8, 24-28; 2 Thessalonians 2:1ff.). 1 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel saw a dream and visions in his mind as he lay on his bed; then he wrote the dream down and related the following summary of it. (4) This is the first prophecy in the book revealed directly to Daniel. We should note Daniels distress in chapter 7 before turning to the other prophecies in Daniel, where we will find that prophecy very often produces distress. Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? 2 So the king summoned the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers [1]to tell him what he had dreamed. Alexandra was also intrigued by the profession Spencer was in, which made her want to spend more time with him. (4) Prophecies not completely fulfilled cannot be fully understood until after their fulfillment. During this ten-nation confederation another ruler will rise as described by the little horn. It may seem to them that their defeat is certain and that their hopes of entering into the eternal kingdom are lost. His disciples were promised that they would share in His reign as King (19:20). The saints (believing Jews when Christ return to earth) will enjoy the kingdom, the fulfillment of Gods promise to Israel.[3] The Popular Bible Prophecy Commentary states that these saints might also include the resurrected Old Testament saints, the martyred tribulation saints, and the tribulation saints who survive the tribulation. Up to this time, it was simply a synonym for being human, a son of man. Now, in verse 23, the angelic interpreter explains the relationship of the boastful beast and the coming of the eternal kingdom of God. 24 As for the ten horns, out of this kingdom ten kings will arise; and another will arise after them,81 and he will be different from the previous ones and will subdue three kings. The use of the word time in Daniel is understood to be years. In chapter 5, King Belshazzars dream should have greatly alarmed him, but apparantly it did not. The second is bear-like. But the saints of the Highest One will receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, for all ages to come. (Daniel 7:1718, NASB95)[2] The four beasts that Daniel saw in his dream were four kings and represented the four kingdoms of these kings. - Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to show the king his dreams. During times of oppression, it may appear the saints are being defeated and that Gods kingdom is but wishful thinking. Alexander the Great's empire and its divisions after his death were predicted long in advance in Daniel 11. If a man cannot remember the dream he saw (it means): his (personal) god is angry with him. Daniels response is testimony to this reality. 8 And all who dwell on the earth will worship him, every one whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain. It should give you a caring heart toward the unsaved as you seek to win them to the Lord. (1) It follows the narrative concerning Mishael, Hananiah and Azariah in the matter of Nebuchadnezzar's golden image (Daniel 3). The first recorded vision comes to Daniel in the form of a night vision, like those of Nebuchadnezzar (2:1; 4:5) during the first year of the reign of Belshazzar. Between the first half of verse 23 and the second half of this verse we have what has been referred to as the great parenthesis in the Old Testament, the mystery of the church and the Church Age which was not revealed to the world until after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. I have heard a number of attempts to explain the gaps in Old Testament prophecy. It seems that three of the kings try to resist him and he overthrows them by force. Daniel said that his thoughts were greatly alarming him and his face grew pale. The inter-relationship between the prophecies of chapters 2 and 7 is demonstrated on the following page: Deterioration: Gold to iron mixed with clay, Deterioration: Nearly human to blaspheming beast. The other three are removed from power but allowed to live for some time after their removal (verse 12). Episode 5 of "How I Met Your Father" Season 2 tested the friendships of everyone in the group. Bob is a pastor/teacher and elder at Community Bible Chapel in Richardson, Texas, and has contributed many of his Bible study series for use by the Foundation. In the second year of Nebuchadnezzar's rule, he had a dream. Nebuchadnezzar became distressed when he received his first night vision (2:1) because he did understand some of his dream. Daniel explains that each of these metals represents a kingdom that would rule the world, and the stone is God . (5) What do the four beasts represent? See John F. Walvoord, Daniel: The Key to Prophetic Revelation (Chicago: Moody Press, 1971), p. 149. (5) Above all, the prophecy in this chapter means precisely what God says it means in this text, nothing more and nothing less. We are not to base our thinking and actions on circumstances, but upon the Scriptures. He surpasses those before him by speaking boastfully, then blaspheming, and finally seeking to overthrow Gods order. The toasting of the gods of the Babylonians with the sacred temple vessels, recorded in chapter 5, may have been Belshazzars final act of blasphemy. 1. Yet Gods covenant to David (2 Samuel 7:16; Psalm 89:14) stands and will ultimately be fulfilled. The statue represented the kingdoms of the earth. All of this is by divine design. (1) Prophecy is necessary because God has chosen to settle His accounts with men slowly. The angel that Daniel was talking with gave Daniel greater detail concerning the fourth beast; he described this fourth beast as a fourth kingdom coming from the earth, it will be different from all the rest, this kingdom will devour the whole earth and tread it down and crush it. So they came and stood before the king. A Vision of Judgment (Daniel 7:9-12) 2. Daniels response to the vision was far from assuring or calming. He could not figure out what the dream meant, so he wanted his advisors to explain it to him. Note these general observations about our passage before we turn to a more detailed study. 13 I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him.77 14 And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations, and men of every language Might serve Him. He was at ease when he received the vision, and then he became fearful, and his mind alarmed him (4:4-5). 9 If any one has an ear, let him hear. Daniel finds nothing to compare to it. (19-26) Daniel explains the rise and coming fall of Nebuchadnezzar. (8) The four beasts are all different, with the last standing apart from the first three. 26 But the court will sit for judgment, and his dominion will be taken away, annihilated and destroyed forever. Prophecy reveals that which we would not and could not expect apart from divine revelation. God will establish His kingdom, and that kingdom, unlike the kingdoms of men, is eternal. They believed that the Messiah would come to establish the kingdom, to bless the Jews and to condemn the Gentiles. Since the last kingdom and the prophecies associated with it have not yet been fulfilled, we must in some way be a part of that kingdom. This part of Daniels dream is new information that was not conveyed in Nebuchadnezzars dream in chapter two. 3 While they are saying, Peace and safety! then destruction will come upon them suddenly like birth pangs upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. The fourth beast appears to differ from the other three in that he is more beastly, more powerful, more destructive, and more arrogant. Whether liberal or conservative, our conclusions grow out of the premises and presuppositions governing the process and the product of our interpretation. This designation refers to God the Father in a way that stresses His eternality, dignity, and power. 1. 11 And I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spoke as a dragon. God is able to raise up kings and put them down. 1 John 3:1-3 says, See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. Daniel's prophecy was one of hope. During those days the revived Roman empire will be ruled by a confederation of ten kings as described by the ten toes of the statue of Daniel 2 and the ten horns of Daniels dream. Having related the dream, Daniel then interprets it: it concerns four successive kingdoms, beginning with Nebuchadnezzar, which will be replaced by the everlasting kingdom of the God of heaven. The saints must believe and behave according to what God has promised about the future the righteous will possess the kingdom of God forever. In fact, Daniel has trouble interpreting some of his own dreams. The emphasis is positive. In chapter 2 we read that Nebuchadnezzar was troubled and terrified by his dream, we read here in verse 15 that Daniel was distressed in his spirit because he knew that God had just shown him a panorama of tremendous events yet future and Daniels distress was his lack of understanding his dream. The death of this king brings about the end of his kingdom. Prophecy is necessary then so that men are reassured of divine deliverance and blessing, as well as divine judgment (see 2 Peter 2:4-9). These kingdoms go from bad to worse. His thoughts alarm him, and his face pales. The three ribs in the bears mouth between its teeth most likely represent Babylon, Egypt, and Lydia, three empires conquered by the Medo-Persian empire. Rome did conquer much of the known world, but it never conquered the whole world as this is describing. La Habra, CA : The Lockman Foundation, 1995, [7]New American Standard Bible : 1995 Update. Daniels dream here in chapter 7 and Nebuchadnezzars dream in chapter 2 are one and the same dream with additional details added to Daniels dream. Second, the prophecies of Daniel are to be understood in the light of the entire Book of Daniel, of the Old Testament, and of the Bible as a whole. It seems safe to assume the interpreter was an angelic being; at least this is the case in chapter 8 (8:15-26). The scene of the four beasts arising from the sea, which Daniel saw in his night vision, is strikingly similar to the account found in the 13th chapter of Revelation: 1 And he stood on the sand of the seashore, and I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns were ten diadems, and on his heads were blasphemous names. Some people have a rather irreverent attitude toward prophecy, they approach it as a pastime and they delight in figuring out complex date schemes and drawing detailed diagrams of the future. The second is Daniel's dream. As we move into the second half of Daniel 7 and begin to dissect Daniels dream with the help of Gods Word and the help of history past because some of this dream which was yet future for Daniel is past history for us. All nations of the earth will serve and live under the peaceful rule of the Son of Man and the people of Israel will receive their promised inheritance in the land of Israel, restored Israel. Usually it refers to a person as a human being. 3:15; Zc. When they came in and stood before the king, 3 Those of Daniel, Nebuchadnezzar, and Darius all agree with the prophecy of Daniel 7. Bob was born and raised in a Christian home i More, The Net Pastors Journal, Eng. These beasts, each different from the other, are described in verses 4-7. (2) While the timing of the fulfillment of divine prophecy may seem remote to the recipient, it still has relevance for him. As I stated two weeks ago the leopard was noted for its swiftness and the two pairs of wings suggests added swiftness beyond the animals own ability. The revelation of the writing on the banquet hall wall, already described in chapter 5, actually happened later, on the last day of Belshazzars life. Suffering and glory are a part of one work. The vision plays on before Daniel, almost as though in answer to his desire to know more. Having gained an appreciation for Daniel and his three Hebrew friends, over a period he came to faith in their God. Robert L. (Bob)Deffinbaugh graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary with his Th.M. Hearing this, Nebuchadnezzar affirms that Daniel's god is "the God of gods and Lord of kings and revealer of mysteries". In Daniels dream the Roman empire was represented by such a terrible beast that Daniel could name no animal which fit its description. Let us listen then, and be sober, enduring the sufferings and trials sent our way, looking expectantly and certainly for His kingdom to come. If not, he could never have become airborne again. The lesson was prepared for older students. Daniel boiled down his vision to its essence, so we would not fail to understand the message he meant to convey to us. 2 Daniel said, I was looking in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea. No wonder this vision causes Daniel such distress. The fourth beast is a fourth king, different than the others. (11) A distinction is made between God the Fatherthe Ancient of Days and God the Sonthe Son of Manwith both playing a part in the establishment of the kingdom. He will abolish all the religious holidays and seek to abolish Gods law in an attempt to destroy the Jewish people. 14 And he deceives those who dwell on the earth because of the signs which it was given him to perform in the presence of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who had the wound of the sword and has come to life. Two weeks ago, we quickly looked at the description of the beast that John sees in Revelation 13 and he described it as a composite of the first three beasts, the body of a leopard, the feet or paws of a bear, and the head and mouth of a lion. While most of those in this kingdom may not have had a true conversion, at least they tolerated the Jewish faith as the religion of the state. If we go back to Daniel 2 and look at the statue in Nebuchadnezzars dream, we find that it too represented four kings and their kingdoms. The prophecy of Daniel 7 nevertheless had great relevance and application to those in Daniels day. The saints should neither believe nor behave on the basis of how things appear to be (the wicked prospering and prevailing over the righteous). Wherever I see the Scriptures speak of the coming kingdom of God, I find suffering closely associated with it. (7) Who is the Ancient of Days? Just so, Christs suffering and glory is but a part of one coming. Belshazzar came to power several years after the death of Nebuchadnezzar and seems to have turned completely away from the God of Israel. (5) While the process involves wicked kings and nations and the suffering of the saints, the culmination is the establishment of Gods eternal kingdom. JPS Tanakh 1917 I kept looking until its wings were plucked, and it was lifted up from the ground and made to stand on two feet like a man; a human mind also was given to it. His vision in chapter 4 should have produced more distress than it did. During the times of the Gentiles four empires, Daniel was told, would rise and rule over the land and people of Israel. The winged lion was a symbol of Babylon, in any history museum that has a Babylonian section you will find artifacts of a winged lion. 18 He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so . The latter prophecy of Daniel 7 adds many more details than were revealed in chapter 2. Daniel returned to his house and explained the situation to his friends Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
